I reciently purchased a 2000 Ford Exploered EB edition. I think I have had the car for around two months, and it is causing me ntheing but stress. The most recent activite on the car is that last night while I was driving, I noticed that the car's "check gage" light was on. Then I looked at the car temp. and it was in the process of overheating. I took the car to the machnic, and it is not overheating for him so he is finding it hard to diagnost the problem. Does anyone have any sugestions on what the possible problem could be? NOSPAM

Hi, In reading others questions, I was hoping to get answers you sent to the following questions: From: George.Vassallo@pfizer.com Have a problem with my heater/ac control that I have not been able to fix. All I get is hot air, even with the Temp controler all the way in the blue, no matter what vent position I have it in. The only time that I can get somewhat cool air is if it is in Max A/C and even than it's not that cold. I've tried replacing the temp control potentiometer switch on the instrument panel, but that didn't work. I have traced back and it appears that all my vaccum lines are working to allow the individual vents to open and close, however I did notice that there is also a vaccum accuated, I will assume a ball valve that is tied into the heater supply line prior to going into the fire wall to the heatre box. It appears that this valve stays fully open unlees in the Max A/C mode, not sure if this is part of the problem. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions as to what might be cauing this problem? from: rdr213@charter.net I have a 1998 ford explorer 4.0L/6cyl. xlt. My A/C compressor isn't cycling on at all. I'm getting warm air when the A/C is switched on. What could be the solution to fix this problem? thanks Roy Could I get the answers to these problems? Thank you, Tina

Keep getting code po153 on my 98 ford ranger. I know that it is an O2 sensor right bank. The truck has a 4.0 litre. It does not seem to affect performance that i have noticed. Is there anything that i should be looking for or doing to correct this problem. I am going to pull the MAF and clean it as i had done some time ago. The code is coming more often know that the weather is getting cooler. It will not happen until i am running at 80 K or 55 mile per hour. But if running over that speed it does not seem to set the code. Could you please direct me to a solution. I am guessing at this point it probably is the sensor itself. Thanks Dave

I recently purchased a 2000 Ford Explorer Sport. About a month ago, I came out of work and could not get it to stay running. It would run so long as I kept my foot on the gas but would die out as soon as I took my foot off. I used the factory remote several times locking and unlocking the doors but nothing. I finally got it to stay running by unlocking the passenger door from the outside with the key. This has happened numerous times since and have been able to get it running by either locking and unlocking various doors from sometimes the inside and sometimes the outside. In addition to this, sometimes the airbag light will continue flashing the whole time I am driving and sometimes it will just stay on and sometimes it acts as it should. Last week, I started having problems with the light on my radio. A couple of times, the light showing the radio station and the clock would not come on till after driving for 5 minutes or so. Today, no matter what I do, I cannot keep the car running. I am a woman and by no means a mechanic, but it appears that the theft device is not disarming. I also have the keypad on my door. My remote door lock pad will not work at my work, I guess due to an interference, so I lock it using the keypad and then unlock it using the key. This seems to be when I have the most trouble. Previously, when I could use the remote to lock and unlock, I would never have a problem. That was not the case today. I used the remote last night to lock and the remote this morning to unlock and could not get it to disarm. I had to drive to and from work with one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas. Every time I took my foot off the gas, it would die. I need to get it fixed but I'm afraid the dealer will charge me a fortune as my son believes it's in the electronics. Please help. Thanks Terry

Hello I want to replace the fuel filter on my 1999 explorer sport (4.0L SOHC), because it won't hold idle all of a sudden. But I can drive it around using two feet (if you know what I mean). So I get under the truck and take off the clips on the filter, and it looks like the filter should just be pulled off the lines after that. I started pulling it and I was pulling pretty hard when I figured that I might be doing something wrong. Am I missing something? or should I just pull harder?

well I couldnt get any help from the haynes manual so I am in a real need of somebody that can help me,,,,,, I hope. I have a 1991 ford explorer. which I recently bought, but the temp and fuel gauge dont work????? I have heard of some vehicles that have a voltage limiter that can go bad, which will make them both not work . I had an experience with a nissan that had the exact same problem. when i further investigated the problem by taking the cluster out, I noticed it had a little box on the back of the instrument cluster that had 3wires on it that were attached to both the temp and fuel gauge? which lead me to think well what the heck maybe thats the problem since everything else I checked out was working great. so I went to the nearest wrecking yard and found one. went home and when I hooked it up they both started working again, it was like wow I couldnt believe they were both coming up and working. so thats what makes me think well maybe ford has something similar to that. but in the manuals they dont have much in the way of telling you if the have a voltage limiter? I was hoping somebody could help me. I am well aware of the typical hole in the float problem. plus can there also be some type of ground problem? any help would be greatly appreciated. hoping to not run out of gas or overheat the engine before i can fix this pain in butt

It will not stay running when I start it.I can drive it to work, it sits for 8 hours and then when I start it, it takes forever before it will run and not die. I try and put it in drive and it will quit running. I go through about 5 tries at this and it will finally go. It jumps around trying to get out the parking lot and sometimes quits when I stop at a stop sign. I am afraid I am going to pull out in traffic, and it will die. It has done this for about 4 months. I have tried different gas and letting it warm up awhile before going. Help!

No big problems but recently she's noticed when she tries to use her side to roll down the passenger side window it doesn't work right. Like it goes down a little or not at all. Could this just be a loose wire on the driver side or a bigger problem and the rear wiper works most of the time, gets stuck in back window. I'm trying to get an appointment to take in the truck when she doesn't need it. Should I be more concerned about the problems?

I just brought a used 1999 Ford Explorer Sport. 2 days ago the check engine light came on. The car has just had an oil change a few weeks ago, right before I got it. It also had a smog check. I've checked the water & oil leves, everything is ok there. It seems to idel a little fast when I first start it up in the mornings, but it's done that since I've had it. It seems to be running normal, and don't notice it leaking or the gauges doing anything odd. However this morning on my way into work I noticed it running a little ruff and looked down at the temp gauge and it was all the way past cold. With in a few minutes though it rose right back up to normal and seemed to be running fine again. Any suggestions on what to check or to look for? Or how to rest set the light so it will go off. All I can see it thaat yellow light in the cornor of my vision when I'm driving and it's driving me crazy. This is my 3rd ford, but my other one were both older and did not have these fancy computer in them ('68 mustang & '88 ranger). Just need a suggestion on which direction I should go in. I've got a water leak that is hard to locate. It's coming in from the headliner at the passenger side rear in the cargo section. Doesn't always do it and doesn't seem to matter if vehicle on level or ?? but it happens and the floor is soaked and midewing. Any experience with this would be appreciated. I have 98 explorer sport, SOHC 4.0 engine w/ 95,000 miles. 2 weeks ago started having intermittnet problems w/ starting, as if battery was slowly dying but would recharge fine w/ driving. 2 days ago had to have it jump started and ever since it sounds like it is a diesel engine. Makes the same noise whether idling or running. No engine lights on, no loss of performance. Took it to mechanics who all said (same shop) it was possibly a "top end but sounds like bottem end noise, possily bad oil pump or spun out barring". They said I would basically have to have part of my engine rebuilt w/ a price quote of between $1500-1900. Further suggested I take it to the Ford dealer as "that should not have happened at 95,000 miles. Any advise or comments you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. ss

Hello, I have a 2000 Ford Exlorer Limited. I have had serveral major problems with this vehicle. I am now told that I have a broken Leaf Spring and it is going to cost over 1,000.00 to fix. I have spoken to several people who say that this should only happen on a car that has been driven 4X4 aggressively or one that is very old. Mine has only been on the highway. To make things more interesting. The exhaust system is loose and rattling and there is a thumping under the car when you start it. I am begining to think that there is an underlying issue here. Can you give me any feedback on this issue? Sincerely, Laura

It has been this way for six months and then in late summer, the heat began working again. Recently, it again has stopped and now i can't even get warm air. Any idea's? Also, my steering wheel, in the first few minutes tends to "stick". It just seems to catch when trying to turn the wheel slightly. any idea's? Thanks

It also feels as if the 4WD is kicking in and the 4X4 High and 4X4 Low comes on the dashboard and flash. I have taken it to the local Ford dealer and the computer check shows no error codes. The service manager was going to contact OASIS and see what they may know, but 2 weeks later no response.

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer XLS 4.0 6Cyl. automatic transmission . Every once in a while, the Overdrive Light begins to flash. It hesitates occasionally when shifting from second to third gear, (just slightly). If I am on normal highway conditions, everything seems to be fine, and no flashing light. But when I am going slow up and down hills, this is when the light begins to flash. Everything else seems to be fine, just this occasional hesitation and flashing light. Dealership states that Ford knows about transmission problem, but says it's normal wear and tear. Transmission has only 60,000 miles on it. Thanks John

I want to install a Prestone Cooling System Flush and Fill Kit on my 2002 Ford Explorer (8 cyl.). I have done this on previous cars I've owned and never had a problem locating the heater inlet hose, until now. I am pretty sure I have properly identified the other (heater outlet) hose, which runs from the firewall to the top of engine close to the water pump. That black rubber hose is marked "OB". There is a very similar hose marked "IB" which runs from the firewall (it starts out parallel to hose "OB") and loses itself somewhere behind the engine near the center of the firewall and doesn't seem to reappear at the top of the engine, anywhere near the thermostat, or anywhere else I can actually see. Can I safely assume that "IB" is the inlet hose, which the Kit instructions direct me to cut to install the T-connector (which is where the garden hose gets connected during the flush and fill process)???

Hi, I have a 1994 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 and noticed a squeaking/chirping noise when my vehicle is moving coming from the tires and also when brakes are applied (sometimes). I just had the front or back brakes (can't recall) done, pads replaced, and bearings repacked, and did notice a faint squealing after brakes were done. I hope they just need to be adjusted and what gets me is I don't think it would be the brakes, since the noise occurs when vehicle is moving and brakes aren't even applied. Hopefully someone has an answer, can't afford another brake job now. Thanks Josh

Immediately upon leaving, we had to bring the Ford explorer 2000 back to them because the brakes didn't stop the car smoothly enough. Once they looked it over again- they resolved that issue, and now my ABS light won't turn off. They have told me that there is something wrong and I will have to have it looked at elsewhere. Couldn't it be something they have done to accidentally disable my ABS system? Please help- so upset. Amy

2002 Explorer EB Edition. The liftgate has developed a large split spreading from just below the glass to the bottom of the liftgate, alongside the Ford emblem. It starts as a crack about 1/4" wide, and near the bottom splits into two like an upside down letter Y. No trauma to the liftgate, rear end or chassis. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

I have a 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer with almost 35000 miles and 2 weeks out of warranty. My transmission died and FORD won't cover it. My position is that they should because my car has been maintained and it's not my fault that it died. The transmission light or some kind of warning light should have come on to tell me there was a problem earlier. They're telling me that 2nd gear is completely gone and the other gears aren't far behind. I brought it in immediately when the warning light came on. What course of action can I take? What's a reasonable price for a new transmission? I'm being given a $3600 estimate. What about rebuilding it? Does that just postpone getting it replaced later? How much should a rebuilt one cost? Thanks!

They offered me $1500.00 credit sticking me for $1700.00. At the same time, the dealer said they fixed a rattle behind the dashboard. They did not. Now a different dealer tells me I need a Timing Chain Tension kit at $1200.00. They say that if I can live with the noise that it will not harm the engine or it's performance. Does anyone know if that is true?

I have a 2001, F150, 2 wheel drive, 5.4 liter motor with about 70,000 miles. Most of the miles are Hwy, miles. I believe that the transmission is a 4R70W. Upon backing out of a driveway the reverse went out. I was told the reverve has no electronics and that it maybe either a hydraulic problem or a gear problem. I am wondering if there is a self check test that can be done to figure out the problem before I take it to a transmission shop. I am mechanically inclined and have worked on older cars in the past. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty. My biggest fear is getting riped off by mechanic. If I can fix it myself and save money, I wouldn't mind giving it a shot. Thank you, Jon Hurst

Recently went to a "10 minute oil change shop" and they commented that that there was a leak in the rear differential and when he looked further he said he saw grey metal shavings indicating fluid levels were low and grinding was occurring. I change oil as recommended and go to Ford for the 15/30K recommended dealer maintenance. He stated Ford doesn't service front and rear diff as part of recurring maintenance. Said I need to ask for it. I'm confused in that I thought that if I followed owner's guide it looks like I'd be in good shape, but he said Explorer is show significant signs of wear and tear. Any advice is appreciated.

The window goes down but does not lock into place. As a result the "Door Ajar" light is on. When I looked at the truck the salesman showed me how to close it using the power lock in the cargo area. When I try this it doesn't lock. Am I not doing something? I'm concerned that this latch might be broken and I missed it when I looked at the truck.

Hi Great site! My 2002 Mercury Mountaineer just turned 51,000 miles and has smoke streaming from the tailpipe. Oil level is good but engine running a bit rough. It is a lease and is due to go back in Jan. 2005. Any idea what it could be? Dealer obviously will want it fixed as I am over the extended warranty by 6,000 miles it will cost me Big bucks to fix I assume. Any help on making the expense smaller will be of great help. It is the 4.6 v8 engine. When I leased the vehicle 3 yrs ago it made a strange noise that the dealer couldn't pinpoint or fix. They changed the tranny and the catalytic converters and told me the rattling noise in the engine was not a big deal. Do you think that this noise could be the cause of the current problem? Once the vehicle is running, it runs fabulous. We had the fuel pump, fuel filter, and a complete tune up done at the Ford dealership after the ran a so called diagnostic analysis.
